Packed With Purpose: Introducing Purposefully KC

October 11, 2026

For years, Ella’s Hope for Autism has worked to create opportunities, build community, and support individuals with autism and developmental disabilities throughout their lives.

Today, I am excited—and honestly a little nervous—to introduce the beginning of something new:

Purposefully KC.

Purposefully KC will create thoughtfully curated Kansas City gift boxes that celebrate local makers, support charitable causes, and provide inclusive work experiences for individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities.

It is an idea built around something simple but important: everyone has value, everyone has talent, and everyone deserves an opportunity to contribute.

The idea behind the boxes

As the mother of two young adults with autism, I have spent years thinking about what life looks like beyond childhood, school, and traditional programs.

Ella and Luke have very different abilities, interests, and support needs. Ella is artistic, detail-oriented, and enjoys tasks with a clear purpose. Luke is nonspeaking and requires significant support, but he also has his own preferences, strengths, and ways of participating.

Like so many parents, I have wondered: Where will their talents be recognized? Where will they feel included? What kinds of meaningful opportunities can be created for them—and for others whose abilities may not fit neatly into a traditional workplace?

Purposefully KC grew from those questions.

The goal is not simply to assemble gift boxes. The larger vision is to create welcoming, supported opportunities where individuals with disabilities can take part in meaningful work at their own pace and according to their own strengths.

One person might fold boxes. Another may add tissue paper, place products, attach labels, count inventory, create artwork, or help prepare thank-you cards. Every role matters because every person brings something valuable to the process.

Celebrating value and talent

October is National Disability Employment Awareness Month, an annual observance recognizing the contributions of people with disabilities to America’s workplaces and economy. The official 2026 theme is “Celebrating Value and Talent.”

That theme could not be more fitting for the launch of Purposefully KC.

True inclusion begins when we stop focusing only on what someone cannot do and start creating opportunities around what they can do. It means recognizing talent in all its forms. It means providing support without lowering expectations. And it means understanding that meaningful work can build confidence, connection, independence, and pride.

Purposefully KC is starting small, but its purpose is big.

Our first Purposefully KC collection

Our initial pilot collection will include three gift-box concepts:

Winter in KC

A cozy collection of Kansas City-inspired treats created for warm drinks, sweet moments, and winter nights at home.

The Good Dog Box

A cheerful assortment of locally inspired treats and gifts for very good dogs—and the people who love them.

KC Through Ella’s Eyes

An art-forward collection inspired by Ella’s creativity and her unique way of seeing the world, featuring artwork and products designed to celebrate individuality.

We will begin with only eight Winter in KC boxes and two or three of each additional design. Starting with a small collection allows us to learn what customers enjoy, develop relationships with local businesses, understand our true costs, and create an assembly process that is welcoming and accessible.

If the first boxes sell out, customers will be able to place preorders. We will also offer an opportunity to request a customized Kansas City gift basket based on the recipient, occasion, and budget.

This week, we begin

This week, Ella, Luke, and several volunteers will begin assembling our first Purposefully KC boxes.

We will take photographs and share pieces of the process as the project comes to life. There will undoubtedly be lessons, adjustments, and imperfect moments along the way—and that is part of the purpose of a pilot.

We are not beginning with a warehouse, a large staff, or hundreds of boxes.

We are beginning around a table.

We are beginning with local products, willing hands, different abilities, and a shared belief that meaningful opportunities can grow from small beginnings.

More than a gift

When someone purchases a Purposefully KC box, they are receiving more than a collection of Kansas City products.

They are supporting local makers.

They are encouraging inclusive work experiences.

They are helping us explore future paid employment opportunities for individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities.

And during this charitable pilot, they are supporting the mission of Ella’s Hope for Autism. One hundred percent of net proceeds will benefit Ella’s Hope and its work supporting individuals and families across the lifespan.

Follow our journey

Over the coming weeks, we will introduce the people, products, artists, and local partners helping bring Purposefully KC to life. We will share photographs from our assembly sessions, previews of the first boxes, preorder information, and opportunities for community involvement.

We hope you will follow along, share our story, and help us discover what Purposefully KC can become.

Because the most meaningful gifts do more than fill a box.

They create connection.
They open doors.
They recognize possibility.
And they are packed with purpose.

Purposefully KC
Local Gifts. Meaningful Work. Greater Impact.

Purposefully KC is currently a fundraising initiative of Ella’s Hope for Autism.
