A Place Where He Belongs
The instructors at KU’s program don’t just teach swimming—they meet each child with compassion, patience, and an understanding of sensory needs. For Luke, that means being seen and supported in ways that are rare and precious.
For nearly eight years, my son Luke—who is non-verbal and lives with profound autism and sensory processing disorder—has found his sanctuary in the KU Sensory Enhanced Aquatics (SEA) program. It is more than just a swim class. It’s the one place where he truly lights up. His laughter echoes off the walls of the pool. His joy is undeniable. And every instructor he’s ever met? Luke wins them over, every single time.
This program isn’t just about skill-building. It’s about regulation, confidence, and joy. Water calms him. He connects through movement. And in the water, Luke’s personality shines in full color.
Why This Program Matters
Drowning is the leading cause of accidental death for children with autism. Many are drawn to water, yet traditional lessons often don’t meet their unique needs. KU’s Sensory Enhanced Aquatics program does—and for many families like mine, that can be life-saving.
Programs like this aren’t a luxury. They’re essential. They offer not just safety, but peace of mind, joy, and the chance for our children to thrive.
Luke & Ella’s Swim-a-thon: July 10th
This summer, both Luke and his sister Ella will be participating in a Swim-a-thon on July 10th to raise awareness and funds for programs like KU SEA. If you’d like to support their efforts, please donate to Ella’s Hope for Autism and designate “KU SEA” in the memo line. We will make sure 100% of your contribution goes directly to this incredible program on your behalf.
Ella’s Hope: Standing Beside the Spectrum
Ella’s Hope has proudly supported the KU SEA program for years. We know firsthand how important it is to empower individuals across the spectrum with opportunities for safety, joy, and inclusion.
We spotlight this today not just to celebrate Luke, but to shine a light on the urgent need for sensory-friendly water safety programs. Your support matters. Together, we can help every child find their own version of joy—whether it’s in a pool, on a puzzle mat, or dancing in the kitchen.
